THE first showcase of films from the Aesthetica Short Film Festival will be presented at the 2015 York Residents’ Festival on January 31, in collaboration with King’s Manor, one of the York festival’s most popular venues.

The festival is a celebration of independent film from across the world and an outlet for championing short filmmaking. Established in 2011, it is York’s only film festival.

The 2014 instalment drew a record-topping 18,000 admissions to of 300 films from 40 countries in 15 locations, complemented by masterclass series. Over its four days, the event attracted filmmakers, film fans, students, families and industry from as far afield as Australia, the United States and Japan.

Now, for the first time, ASFF will bring screenings to the York Residents’ Festival, giving an opportunity to experience highlights from the 2014 festival for free with a YorkCard. A diverse range of genres will be shown, encompassing animation, fashion, drama, music, video, comedy, documentary and experimental.

On January 31, King's Manor will be transformed into a pop-up cinema where a family friendly programme will be followed by evening screenings.

The first show at 11.30am will be aimed at viewers aged four to eight, followed by shows at 1.30pm and 3.30pm for children aged four to 12. Children can watch Jessica Austin's delightful animation The Importance Of Being Bear and The Lampshade Collective’s The Gallant Captain, an epic adventure tale that follows a boy and his cat as they journey beyond the familiar.

The evening screenings will offer a snapshot of last autumn's festival with a viewing of the 2014 opening night programme at 5.30pm curated by festival director Cherie Federico. These films will include Lindsay Blatt’s Herd In Iceland, winner of the Best Documentary award at ASFF 2014, which follows the annual migration of rugged Icelandic horses across glorious landscapes.

A collection of outstanding films from 2014 will show at 7.30pm in a Pick of The Fest spanning animation, music, fashion, comedy and drama.

Among the films will be Blatt's Herd In Iceland; Nicolas Novak's Entretien d’embauche (Job Interview); Alex Turvey's River Island x Joseph Turvey (featuring Justanorm); Chris Shepherd's The Ringer, and Robert Hackett's Night Mail music video for Public Service Broadcasting.

Cherie Federico says: “We want everyone to enjoy the films, which are of outstanding quality and exemplify fresh approaches to filmmaking.”

Visitors who attend the screenings will receive a flyer giving 15 per cent off tickets and passes to ASFF 2015, which will run from November 5 to 8. Festival tickets will be available online from August 17.
