HARROGATE International Festivals will be hosting the Big Screen in the new location of the Valley Gardens this weekend to accommodate Yorkshire's Le Grand Départ for the Tour de France.

Le Tour enthusiasts can watch the riders live on screen as the peloton races into Harrogate on Stage One on Saturday from 2.45pm, but that is only one highlight of a programme that combines live sport with Hollywood blockbusters and family movies in the fourth year of this free annual event.

Big Screen begins at 10.30am on Saturday with Room On The Broom (U), a magical tale of friendship and family, a kind witch and her cat, from Magic Light Pictures, producers of The Gruffalo and The Gruffalo's Child.

The animated adventure Despicable Me 2 (U), at 11am, has more minion madness in the return of Gru (voiced by Steve Carell), supported by the girls, the minions and a host of new outrageous characters.

In Brave (U), at 1pm, the headstrong Merida takes an heroic journey, determined to carve her own path in life as she accepts the challenge to undo a beastly curse before it is too late, discovering the meaning of true bravery en route.

In the electrifying musical Grease (PG), at 6pm, good girl Sandy (Olivia Newton-John) and greaser Danny (John Travolta) fall in love over the summer and make a song and dance about it. Pretty Woman (15) closes the day at 8pm with its modern-day fairy tale of Julia Roberts walking off the street into Richard Gere’s heart.

Sunday's line-up opens at 10am with Monsters University (U), in which a little monster attends Monster University to become a Scarer. Billy Crystal and John Goodman lead the voiceover cast as things go haywire for the monster misfit.

Frozen (U), the children’s hit of the year with a cool soundtrack loved by adults and young ones alike, will be shown at 11.45am with its ice-melting tale of sisters, ice queens and true love.

The Wimbledon Men’s Final will be screened live from1.45pm. Last year, Harrogate had its own Murray Mount as 2,000 people watched Scotsman Andy Murray became the first Brit since Fred Perry in 1936 to lift the holy grail of tennis. Pack the strawberries and champers, whoever will be playing this weekend.

The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel (12A) resumes the film programme at 6pm, when Dame Judi Dench, Maggie Smith, Bill Nighy, Tom Wilkinson and Dev Patel lead the all-star cast as a group of British retirees travel to India to take up residence in what they believe is a newly restored hotel. The Marigold turns out to be less than luxurious, but life and love begins again as the Brits begin to let go of the past.

The night ends on a sporting note at 8.15pm with Rush (15), Ron Howard’s gripping account of the 1970s rivalry between Formula One drivers James Hunt and Niki Lauda.

Please note, film times may be subject to change after Le Tour and Wimbledon, in case the live sports events over-run.
