CITY Screen, York, will mark last Sunday’s death of American actor Philip Seymour Hoffman with a 3.45pm charity screening of The Master (15) on Sunday afternoon in aid of Adfam.

Marketing manager Dave Taylor says: “I’m sure many people who’ve seen Philip Seymour Hoffman’s films will be deeply saddened to hear of his death. Join us on Sunday to celebrate the career of a truly great actor at our special tribute showing of The Master and help raise funds for Adfam, a national charity dedicated to supporting families affected by drugs and alcohol.

“City Screen invites you to donate £1 to Adfam when you buy your ticket, and Picturehouse Cinemas will match every donation.”

Outlining the work of Adfam, Dave says: “It’s the only national umbrella organisation working specifically with and for families affected by drugs and alcohol. Their final goal is that no family member in need of support should go without it.

“As well as providing support materials and training specifically for families and professionals, Adfam informs policy development and campaigns both locally and nationally for improved family support services.”

In Paul Thomas Anderson’s 2012 film The Master, war-damaged sailor Freddie Quell (Joaquin Phoenix) falls under the malign influence of charismatic cult leader Lancaster Dodd, played by Philip Seymour Hoffman, right.

“Phoenix and Seymour Hoffman have never been better as the two characters develop an insidious mutual dependency and the colour-drenched 70mm camerawork is equally intense,” says Dave.
