HOLOCAUST Memorial Day on Sunday will be commemorated with a programme of events around York.
City Screen, York, will participate in the day, which year takes the theme of journeys, by showing the film Into The Arms Of Strangers: Stories Of The Kindertransport.
Narrated by Dame Judi Dench, this documentary tells how the Kindertransport rescue operation saved the lives of more than 10,000 mainly Jewish children by bringing them by train to the United Kingdom, where the young refugees were adopted by British families.
Dave Taylor, City Screen’s marketing manager, says: “Over a number of years at City Screen, we have felt it important to mark this event. It is important in York, being the site of one of the first pogroms against Jews in Europe in 1190, when 150 people were killed at York Castle, now known as Clifford’s Tower.”
Lars Waldorf, senior lecturer from the Centre for Applied Human Rights at the University of York, will introduced the 3pm screening. “We’re especially pleased to welcome Lars, who will draw modern-day parallels from this historical event,” says Dave.
