YORK street musician and piano teacher Kieran White is to perform his musical accompaniment to Buster Keaton’s film The General on Saturday night at the Yorkshire Museum of Farming at Murton Park, near York.

The screening of the original full-length feature film directed by and starring Keaton will take place in the function room at 8pm as Kieran adds to his list of memorable locations after the Quad at York St John University in 2007; a black tie/red carpet gala night as the grand finale to the Silver Screen Week at Fairfax House, York in September 2009; City Screen, York in October 2010; and Clements Hall, York in September 2012.

Kieran is holding Saturday’s event to raise funds for the Derwent Valley Light Railway’s much-needed engine shed.

“Basically, it’s to be a maintenance shed,” says Derwent Valley president David Wilde. “It will enable repairs to be done over the winter and generally when inclement weather prevents work from being carried out.”

Kieran is not a trainspotter but says: “There’s a mile of track there and this is the centenary year of its opening, and when you go there it really feels like you’re stepping back a century in time.

“They have this Driver For A Fiver scheme where you pay £5 to drive the steam engine. Fantastic.”

Kieran’s live performance to Keaton’s celebrated rail track movie will marry bullet-fast musical responses to Buster’s visual antics from cinema’s golden age. His composition will contain 70 musical quotes ranging from Tchaikovsky’s 1812 Overture to The Teddy Bear’s Picnic and incorporate styles as diverse as Wagner and ragtime.
