Tom Wanless is exhibiting at the Blake Gallery, Blake Street, York, until May 29.

Born in 1929, the West Yorkshire watercolour artist studied painting and printmaking at Sunderland College of Art and as a post-graduate at Bristol University and the University of Wales.

Having earlier qualified as a teacher at Durham University, Tom enjoyed a long career in art education, including appointments as an external examiner for degree courses, and he finished his lecturing days in Leeds as head of art at the City of Leeds and Carnegie College. In 1976, he was appointed co-ordinator for the creative arts at Leeds Polytechnic (later Leeds Metropolitan University).

In 1989, he retired to concentrate on his own artwork full time. The quality of his work was recognised immediately at the Mall Galleries in London, where he has exhibited regularly, and he was elected as a member of the Royal Institute of Oil Painters and the Royal Society of British Artists in quick succession. On eight occasions, he has been selected for the final of the Singer/Friedlander Watercolour Competition.

Tom has exhibited widely in one man and group shows and his work is held in public and private collections around the world.

The Blake Gallery is open 10am to 5pm daily, except Tuesdays and Sundays.
