York Minster will remain open tomorrow until midnight for the first Minster Nights event of the New Year.

Visitors can enjoy the rare sight and sound of the cathedral coming alive at night with light and sound installations, sculptures and performances.

Tomorrow will be the third such Minster Nights, following events last May and August, and this time the focus will be on relaxation, contemplation and reflection.

Among the artists present will be Airvent Media, who will create a light and sound walk-in experience in the Chapter House, and Tony Murray, who will install figures around the Five Sisters window.

Irish singer and songwriter Kayla Kavanagh will perform on keyboard, guitar, electric violin, flute and the hammered dulcimer, while Minster Nights favourites the Mooted Theatre Company return to perform an excerpt of Chekhov’s The Evils Of Tobacco.

Hidden Minster tours will allow visitors to see areas of the cathedral not normally accessible to the public, such as the Mason’s Loft and Chapter House Roof void, the crypt passages, the West End bell towers and the walkway over the Five Sisters Window.

Three different tours will depart at 7pm and 8.30pm at a cost of £8 per person, and on account of their high demand, tickets are available only in advance on 01904 557208. Health restrictions apply and visitors must be aged 16 or over.

The Undercroft and Treasury will stay open to let visitors explore the Minster’s foundations to the accompaniment of ambient music. Tower-top trips will be available at 45-minute intervals throughout the evening, weather permitting; tickets cost £5 for adults, £3 for concessions.

As part of Minster Nights, the Dean and Chapter are inviting budding photographers to take part in a competition through the Minster Flickr site. Up to three shots of Minster Nights should be submitted up to Kendal Mosley-Chalk in the marketing department – kendalm@yorkminster.org – who will upload each photo on the Minster’s Flickr gallery for discussion.

After three weeks, the most creative and innovative shot will be chosen for use in future publicity of Minster Nights and the winner will receive an exclusive tour of the Minster in the company of four friends.

Minster Nights are free to York residents with either a York Minster resident card or proof of address. For non-residents, the normal Minster admission prices apply. For further information, visit yorkminster.org
