MERMAID & MILLER, a York based arts and crafts co-operative run by adults with learning difficulties and disabilities, holds its first exhibition from tomorrow at the Your Emporium shop in Micklegate.

The exhibition will run until Wednesday December 5 and showcases the co-op’s latest art, up-cycled furniture and home wares. Mermaid & Miller specialise in taking items people throw away and making them beautiful, hence the title of their exhibition, The Art of Re-Invention.

The co-operative was formed in January year by individuals who were keen to use their skills to earn an income. With support from the Blueberry Academy, they have been selling items in the Your Emporium shop since April. The organisers say: “The co-operative is slowly growing in numbers and all members are active decision makers and have improved their skills in customer service, retail and IT since joining, as well as learning about marketing and running a small enterprise. Profits are shared between members.”

Featured in the exhibition will be photography from David Kenward, a young photographer whose work has been commended in the National Down Association competition for two years running.

The shop will be open throughout the exhibition selling a variety of ethical, locally crafted and affordable Christmas gifts. Your Emporium is open from Tuesday to Friday, 10am to 4pm, and on Saturday from 9.30am to 2pm.
