AUGUST can often be a tricky month for comedy promoters as the vast majority of “the decent comics” spend the month at the Edinburgh Fringe, cautions Hyena Lounge Comedy Club supremo Toby Clouston-Jones.

However, the unflappable Toby has still come up trumps for tomorrow night’s 8pm bill in York.

“Being only a couple of hours away by train has meant that this weekend’s show can still feature a couple of acts popping down from Scotland to perform alongside a couple who are giving the festival a miss this year,” he says.

Mark Olver nips south of the border from his Dancing About Architecture show at The Caves to fill the headline spot. “He’s the most in-demand television warm-up artist in the country, and like a snuggly panda, he’s a warm-hearted performer, a million miles away from the brutal style of comedy of Frankie Boyle and Jimmy Carr and one of the most natural storytellers around.”

Like Olver, compere Tony Jameson is spending August in Edinburgh, in his case performing Tell Tales with fellow northerner Katie Mulgrew, but he will dash southwards to hold tomorrow’s Hyena show together. “This fast-rising storyteller from the north east is following in the footsteps of Chris Ramsey as the latest Geordie with massive potential,” says Toby.

Edinburgh is not on the summer map of Bethany Black, who instead returns to the Hyena Lounge after stealing the show there a month ago.

“Being able to mine comedy gold out of the darkest of subjects is a gift that Bethany possesses in spades,” says Toby. “She’s turning into one of the most talked-about acts in the country and it’s easy to see why with her mix of skilful writing and easy charm.”

Another returnee will be relaxed Manchester comic Sean Moran. “He’s fast becoming a firm fixture on the north west comedy circuit and big things are expected for the ex-school teacher,” tips Toby.
