KING of quips Tim Vine delights in silly puns and one-liners, and a packed Grand Opera House welcomed his unique brand of comedy with open arms.

Vine’s support, comic magician John Archer, fooled the legendary Penn And Teller on TV and earned himself a trip to open their show in Las Vegas.

Charming and funny, Archer entertained the sell-out crowd with deceptively simple-looking mathematical tricks, before the main act took to the stage.

Vine has done this for years, but it’s clear he still loves his work – he beams when inventive props and annoyingly-catchy musical numbers crack up the audience.

Firing out hundreds of gags in a 75-minute set, the laughs come thick and fast, but where a gag didn’t get the reaction he hoped for, it’s quickly followed up to make amends.

Occasional fluffed lines during Sunday’s set interrupted Vine’s flow, but he bought himself thinking time with a few older gags for guaranteed laughs then got back on track (pun absolutely intended).

The beauty of Vine’s act is that it is suitable for everyone, regardless of age, and the crowd reflected this, with students, pensioners, Not Going Out fans, and everyone in between rocking with laughter. The only downside with the scattergun approach Vine uses is that it’s almost impossible to keep track of the jokes, so when someone asks you about the show, you’ll be unable to remember and share a gag. In fairness though, it’s probably best to leave it to the professional.
