HE'S been variously described as "daft as a brush", "as switched on as a power station" and "the 22nd most important person on radio".

What Ian McMillan will certainly be, when he hits Ripon Leisure Centre with his Big Family Show next Friday, is a blast of fresh air.

The comic and poet, who is Barnsley FC's Poet In Residence, Yorkshire TV's Investigative Poet and C5's News Poet, specialises in hilarious verses and tales guaranteed to get you rolling in the aisles.

He has honed his wit - and his poetry - in a host of radio appearances, which include hosting The Verb on BBC Radio 3 and appearing on Today, 5 Live and Front Row.

But a seat in the front row at Ripon might be just the place to see the man behind the radio voice.

Ian McMillan's Big Family Show, Ripon Leisure Centre, Ripon International Festival Preview Night, Friday, September 1, starts 7.30pm. Tickets, priced £11 (£5 children) from the Ripon Leisure Centre on 01765 601353.
