IRISHMAN Sean Hughes is on his first British stand-up tour in nearly a decade this autumn, mulling over The Right Side Of Wrong at the Grand Opera House, York, next Friday.

Once the youngest ever winner of the Perrier Award at the Edinburgh Fringe (in 1990), Hughes has developed a career as a comedian, actor and writer.

He had a long run in the pop quiz show Never Mind The Buzzcocks; made two series of the sitcom Sean's Show; and this year he had a cameo role in Coronation Street and starred as Peter Davison's bumbling, lazy lodger sidekick in The Last Detective.

His film work has taken in starring roles in The Commitments and Spike Milligan's Puckoon, while on the West End stage he played Touchstone the clown when cast alongside Sienna Miller and The League of Gentlemen's Reece Shearsmith in As You Like It in 2005.

Despite a nine-year break from performing stand-up, Hughes was still voted number 40 in Channel 4's poll of the World's 100 Greatest Comedians.

"I've been away for a while speaking other people's words, and to my disappointment got passed over for Maria, missed out on Joseph and clearly wasn't a contender for Britain's Got Talent, " he says. "Now I'm gagging to be on the loose again and let rip. It's time to be truthful out there and there's nothing off limits."

Tickets for the 8pm show cost £16 on 0870 606 3595 or online at www.GrandOperaHouseYork.co.uk
