ON March 25, the comic-book clash of Batman vs Superman: Dawn Of Justice will swarm all over over British cinemas. Two dark nights earlier,  Batman enthusiast James Wilson-Taylor will transform The Basement into a bat cave for Bat-Fan, his 2015 Edinburgh Fringe show now playing York in its only Yorkshire tour date.

Directed by Jon Brittain, who brought Margaret Thatcher, Queen Of Soho to York's Great Yorkshire Fringe last summer, the show presents stand-up, sketches and songs direct from Gotham City, written and performed by  James the joker with additional material by Brittain.

On March 23, you can see all the Bat-films recapped, as well as experience the world's first Batsical – James's Batman musical – as he pitches himself as the next caped crusader and asserts why he is perfectly placed to replace Ben Affleck in the upcoming film.

Here James bats back answers to Charles Hutchinson's questions about Bat-Fan vs Batman vs Superman.

What was the first Batman caper you watched and what do you recall of that experience. How old were you?

"I must have been about seven or eight and used to watch the Adam West TV series on Channel 4 on Saturday mornings. It’s still a great show – Adam West never gets enough credit for how knowingly funny he was – but it’s particularly great for kids and a perfect introduction to superheroes."

What makes you identify with Batman?

"I guess people love him because he’s just an ordinary bloke. Well, a very rich ordinary bloke, but there’s no superpowers which makes him a bit more relatable than Superman, who is basically a God. Plus the outfit’s pretty cool."

How many times have you watched each film?

"It differs from film to film; The Dark Knight a lot but that rubbish George Clooney one [1997's Batman & Robin] I tend to avoid.

Do you get out enough…apart from when you do your Bat-Fan shows?

"Of course. When I go out, I like to strap a Kellogg's Variety Pack around my waist and pretend it' my own bat utility belt. I’m very cool that way."

Which is your favourite Batman film and why?

"I’ll always have a soft spot for the 1960s stuff but 2008's The Dark Knight is pretty hard to beat. Heath Ledger alone, as The Joker, makes it worthwhile."

Which is the worst Batman film and why?

"Batman & Robin. Clooney with nipples on his suit. Enough said."

Who is your favourite Batman and why? Adam West from TV, or Michael Keaton, Val Kilmer, George Clooney or Christian Bale?

"I do like Keaton a lot but again Adam West is just hilarious."

And your worst?

"Clooney. Great actor, wrong film."

Why would you make a better Batman than “Batfleck” in the upcoming Batman vs Superman?

"I mean the only director who wants to keep working with Ben Affleck is himself. Plus I have my own superpower: an MA in musical theatre."

What makes Batman superior to Superman?

"Superman is boring. Pure and simple."

What does it feel like to wear Batman’s cape?

"Well, my mum made my costume, so it’s well-fitted and breathable, thanks for asking."

Did you ever turn your bedroom into a Bat cave?

"I prefer to think that I turned a Bat cave into a bedroom."

Would you like to live in Gotham City?

"God no. Do you know what the crime rate is there?"

What exactly is the point of Robin?

"Getting hurt instead of Batman. Every hero needs a decoy."

By comparison with the comics, what do the film-makers get right and wrong about Batman’s character and his villains?

"Well, to be serious for a second, one of the reasons Batman works is that it keeps changing over time. So the comics and the movies all have different eras and styles that each have their own audiences so, really, there is no right or wrong approach. Personally, I like the Nineties' era comics by Jeph Loeb and the 60s' TV show but everyone has their own opinions."

Can you hang upside down from a ceiling?

"Only when listening to Lionel Ritchie."

What songs do you sing in the Bat-Fan show?

"I have my own theme song, a duet with Robin, a song about Batman’s unconventional love life and the whole show culminates in a mini Batman musical – a Batsical if you will."

What songs would Bruce Wayne sing in his quiet, downtime moments?

"In the show, I imagine singing some Phantom Of The Opera. I think that’s about right."

Which comic-book arc would you like to be made into the next Batflick?

"The Long Halloween is incredible; it reads like a proper detective story that just happens to involve superheroes. Plus The Killing Joke is a properly scary take on The Joker. Either of those would work well."

Thank you, James, for answering these questions...

"No problem. They may not be the answers you deserve but they are the answers you need right now."

Oh, and finally, do you have any connections with York?

"My fiancée's entire family are from the area so I’ve spent a lot of time there. It will almost feel a homecoming of sorts."
