WHEELY good fun was the order of the day at York’s second annual Festival Of Cycling.

Thousands of people flocked to Rowntree Park over the weekend for the free event organised by Cycling City York.

One of the most popular attractions was a “try-out” zone where visitors could test out a range of bicycles, including tandems, tricycles and even bouncy bikes.

Graham Titchener, programme manager for Cycling City York, said: “It was great to see toddlers coming in having never ridden a bike before and going away pedalling. There were some really special moments.”

Crowds also flocked to see daredevil performances by a top bicycle stunt display team.

I wish the Press had announced this BEFORE the event.

perhaps one of the 'special moments' would be to define 'footpath' to some of the participants.

Aahh! Another cycling story for York's miseries to whinge about..

I say:

Well done Cycling City York. I bet you gave a lot of people a great time. Wish I could have made it.

Agreed! They should all get out more - the fresh air would do them good!

The event was last weekend you plonker.
.
Proof positive that anti-cycle prejudice is alive and well. See the word cycling, don't read the story and spread your miserable guff.
.
The event was great, loads to do, kids loved it, everyone was smiling.
.
Great stunt photo too!

Good day, and a free seat cover. Bonus! Just a shame that the rain cancelled the stunt events. And hey , if the anti-cylcing brigade are so serious in their rhetoric, why weren't they there protesting, heckling and throwing eggs at us? The anonymity of a computer screen is a wonderful thing!!

I popped down and it looked great fun. BUT may I remind cyclists that Terry Ave and the path leading past the millennium bridge is NOT a dedicated cycle path! And the next time one of you rides up behind me ringing your bell and glaring as you ride past don't be surprised if you end up in the river with your bike closely behind you! Grrr.

Ah that's better.

Never noticed any more lycra fiends than usual this weekend, perhaps the closure of Micklegate and Nunnery Lane sent them on different routes.

Quite right Woody. Terry Avenue and the associated Sustrans routes are shared use paths for all non-motorised travellers plus mobility scooter users.
It is helpful for cyclists to slow down when approaching pedestrians, particularly dog walkers, and announce their approach with a brief bell tinkle or polite "excuse me."
No excuse for frantic bell ringing and pedalling past like tear a**es which puts other path users in mortal fear.
There have reportedly been some recent instances of this at Bishopthorpe.
Needless to say I was at the Festival and thoroughly enjoyed it.

Thanks to the First Bus that nearly ensured I didn't get there in the first place save for some very frantic back-tracking. Proof again that cyclists are seen as the scum of the earth on York's streets and this is not and will never be a 'cycling city' depsite this great event put on by the concil.

As one of the organisers of the event I'd like to thank everyone who came along to enjoy the fun and have a good time. It was better attended than last year and there was more to do and see. We had visitors from York and from further afield all of whom enjoyed themselves. A lady from Lowestoft council, wanted to know why York was so good at putting on such great activities for everyone to enjoy when her local authority seemed unable to.
So thank you again for helping to make it a success - same again next year?
