THE talent and skill of innovative teenagers was celebrated at the annual Inspirations event organised by the North Yorkshire Business and Education Partnership.

More than 130 science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) projects by young people were showcased at the Yorkshire Air Museum.

About 80 judges from Yorkshire and Humber businesses viewed the projects and over 50 awards were given.

Scarlett Barclay, 17, of Fulford School, was awarded the George Cayley Trophy as the overall winner.

She said: “I was overwhelmed when my name was read out.

“There has been a lot of effort involved with my design but I entered for my friend who has cerebral palsy – this is for her.”

Other winners include Hannah Whitehouse, St Peter’s School with her flat pack coffee table and Georgina Mountain and Amanda Paul, York High School, with their science project “effect of acid rain on crops”.

Yvonne Emerson, Event Organiser at NYBEP, said: “This year we had a record number of projects entered into Inspirations.

“It was clear from the exceptionally high standard of work that many hours had gone into the making of the projects.”
