CAMPAIGNERS and election candidates in York have launched a road safety petition because of speeding fears.

The petition, organised by Liberal Democrat runners in the Holgate ward at tomorrow’s City of York Council elections, follows concerns raised by residents about road safety in the Holgate Road area, including routes such as Carr Lane, Poppleton Road and Hamilton Drive.

It calls on the council to review speeds in the area and whether traffic lights at the pedestrian crossing near Holgate Bridge are being obeyed, after claims some motorists are failing to stop at red. The petition is also seeking more police enforcement of the rules of the road in the ward.

“Local people know what a dangerous stretch of road this is and they want to see action to reduce the risk of accidents,” said Nick Love, who is standing for the Lib Dems in Holgate alongside Simon Rodgers and Martin Bartlett.

“We want to help make that happen.”
