Get it sorted
12:08pm Saturday 11th August 2012 in Letters By Reader's letter
LAST week, having had a hospital stay – where, I might add, I received excellent treatment and consideration – I had need to go into town for a few items in the Parliament Street vicinity.
It’s quite a while since I ventured there and, of course, I was aware that the Splash Palace had been demolished, but I was totally unprepared for the bleak and desolate appearance of the area it had occupied: A bare, flagged area with just nothing else. It’s a disgrace.
Why couldn’t some trees have been planted or some tubs with large plants, and half a dozen seats for people to have a sit down?
Face it, there are few enough seats in Parliament Street, anyway, but the ones there are have at least a bit of shelter and greenery with the trees.
It’s criminal to leave that area as it is, looking like a piece of spare land that no one knows what to do with. Time to get it sorted and make it look attractive.

Without splash palace Parliament St is a wonderful wide open space. It's a boulevard.
It's a joy to walk along and be able to see such distance in the centre of town.
It's amazing that removing one small building has made the whole area seem less congested, less claustrophobic, more pleasant.
Hopefully it will be complemented well by the regeneration of the White Swan on Piccadilly.
Yes, it's a little barren. In time things will be found suitable and gradual titivation will happen.
To call it "a disgrace" or "criminal" is nothing more than histrionics.
