I READ with some sadness about the death of Irene Faulkner (The Press, September 24). She worked tirelessly for 38 years as a Labour councillor during periods when it was less common for women to be elected than it is today.
She was a guiding light as to why this was a good thing and an example as to why we need to do more to encourage women to stand for council. Good comprehensive education in York also owes a lot to the foundations she helped lay.
On behalf of City of York’s Council’s Labour group, I would like to pass on my condolences to Irene’s children, Nick and Penny.
Our thoughts are with them at this difficult time.
Coun James Alexander, Leader of City of York Council’s Labour opposition group, Holgate Road, York.
