Lights in the sky on New Year's Day

At 12.30am on New Year’s Day I was taking the air at the back door, after seeing in the New Year, when I became aware of a loose formation of ten bright orange lights in the sky, moving quite fast from east to west above York.

Viewed with binoculars, they showed no sign of navigation lights, as one would expect with an aircraft.

They made no sound and had the shape of an egg on its end. They were visible for about six minutes while they passed over, disappearing eventually behind a bank of cloud.

Given the time and date, and the fact that my wife is somewhat sceptical despite seeing them for herself, I am beginning to doubt my eyes. UFOs or pink elephants, did I really see something?

I had a good night, but not that good.

I am afraid these are not UFO's.

The are Sky Lanterns, They are a egg shaped paper device with a candle inside. When lit they emit an orange glow and rise on upwards in to the atmosphere.

Wow! This is massive! First contact is surely only a matter of days away!
I can hear those five notes ringing in my ears and I'm sculpting my mashed potato as we speak! Mind yer bums everyone cos aliens are into proctology!
.
At any other time I might have been sceptical, I'd expect to see fireworks or chinese lanterns in the sky as a matter of course on any weekday, but just after midnight on new years eve? Let me be the first to welcome our new alien overlords!
