Stephen Lewis’ features with photos are a great part of the Press. But in Yesterday Once More (“Eyes of York on Castle Museum”, The Press, May 21) he perpetuated a common mistake. It is not the Eye of York, it is the Eye of Yorkshire.
The round area in the middle of York Castle did not belong to the city but to the Sheriff of York, who represented the Crown - and through him belonged to the King.
This was royal territory into which York residents might sometimes be invited and sometimes dragged – to prison or the court.
Under the old voting system, property-owners with the power to elect the county MPs came here from the whole of Yorkshire, over several days, to declare their vote. This legal distinction can still be seen, there is a boundary marker in place on the Castle Mills side of the castle.
But I congratulate Stephen on his features, keep them up.
