IT’S time to act against social media political trollers.

The threat of left wing trollers on social media threatening and cyber attacking our Members of Parliament has got to be a priority of government.

It is totally unacceptable for this insidious dark online cesspit to be allowed to operate on their own bullying terms.

It is a serious and real threat to our democracy and has no place in British politics.

York Central MP Rachael Maskell has received serious online abuse and no doubt Tory Julian Sturdy has also suffered.

Parliament needs to urgently draw up laws to fine or imprison the perpetrators of vile communications that cross the line of reasonable criticism and debate. Elections can now be manipulated online which was unthinkable a few years ago.

Moderate centre ground Labour Party members are being targeted daily to a tirade of profanity on their Twitter and Facebook accounts because they don’t accept the Jeremy Corbyn hero worship. This is very sinister.

I’m a fairly new member of social media. Facebook is quite useful if you stick to “friends” and block the public but why do Twitter allow users to be anonymous?

It is totally pointless 98 per cent of the time replying to any national political debate on Twitter as the postings are so objectionable and inane.

Perhaps time for social media to be banned during elections and brought under the Representation of the People Act.
