THE proposals to address traffic problems in Fossgate can only be described as underwhelming.

Despite traders and local residents calling for cars to be banned the response of the council is to recommend reversing the traffic flow and hope that the number of cars will be reduced.

It is recognised that the existing restrictions, shown on a traffic sign, are completely ignored with up to 91 cars an hour accessing Fossgate.

It therefore beggars belief that similar signs at the other end of Fossgate will be miraculously obeyed.

If pedestrians, who are the first priority for the council, are to benefit then Fossgate should be subject to the same arrangements as the rest of the city centre.

Unless and until physical bollards are in place at the junction with Pavement the abuse will continue.
