JOHN Barry was a great son of York. He had a huge influence on pop culture, first with the John Barry Seven and later though his music for the Bond films and others.

In her own way, however, Edna Crichton is no less iconic. She was the city’s first-ever woman Lord Mayor, holding office from 1941-42, the year of the York Blitz. In the aftermath of that, she went from bombed home to bombed home, comforting people.

This week, York Civic Trust will be unveiling blue plaques to both. It is hard to think of anyone more deserving.
