CLLR Fiona Derbyshire’s comments about Yearsley Pool beggar belief (Letters, March 18).

Her letter attempts to rewrite history and is completely misleading about the review and its outcome.

For the Labour Party to claim they care about swimmers and any loss of service is the height of hypocrisy.

The only reason the future of Yearsley Pool and its funding has ever been in doubt is that for two decades the York Labour Party have repeatedly tried to close this facility.

I’m qualified to comment, as I’ve devoted 17 years of my life and a large amount of savings leading two campaigns to save this precious pool against their attacks.

We have always been supported in the council by the Liberal Democrats, without their support the pool would have closed years ago.

Under Labour the pool was due to close as soon as the new stadium pool opened. The private operator chosen by Labour in 2014 was working to that timetable of closure.

The review had to resolve the difficult mess Labour left behind.

Its outcome safeguards over 90 per cent of the service, and gives Yearsley Pool a long-term future.
