DESPITE having been a cyclist and, therefore, all for people getting out and about on their bikes, I do feel there is proportion that think no rules of the road apply to them.

There are many pedestrian zones in York, especially Goodramgate, Colliergate and King’s Square, all stated on City of York Council website as such.

A few months ago, the council announced in The Press that they were to step up the correct access use of these areas.

However, if anything, pedestrians find they are dodging cyclists at speed, going the wrong way etc, with no consideration to young children, elderly or tourists wandering about in a world of their own.

Many a time, if you comment to them, you get verbal abuse.

May I suggest to the council to make the signage (especially at the top end of Goodramgate) more visible and spend a couple of days doing a clamp down?

Word will soon spread through the regular offenders’ community.

The cities of Bury St Edmunds and Lincoln are good examples of these zones.
