WALMGATE, York’s city centre?
This is so, according to a Guardian Weekly picture caption, beneath a headline: Tide of resentment engulfs York.
Variations of what constitutes the city’s centre surely abound.
My own treasured impression is of a triangle that embraces the Mansion House, Exhibition Square, dominated by artist William Etty, and the world-famous Minster.
Walmgate might claim to be the friendliest street in York as its name can imply. In hearty agreement about this, one feels, is The Press.
