YORK’S schools give us all a lot to be proud of and we are one of the strongest performing local authority areas in terms of educational achievement.

But I am concerned that the Government has got its priorities for our schools completely wrong.

The two big announcements we have heard so far from the Government have been to scrap parent governors, and to bring in new grammar schools.

The first idea has already been dropped after a national outcry. I am worried that the second will mean more children across the country being segregated and left behind at far too young an age.

At the same time, we have seen no progress on changing the unfair national funding formula for schools.

At the moment - York schools get on average £4,209 per pupil, while some areas of the country get double that amount. We need a new funding system that gives York a fair deal.

Meanwhile, as I’ve highlighted, the Government should reverse a planned cut to our Education Services Grant next year (The Press, November 22). Something that the Chancellor was silent on in his Autumn Statement.

Theresa May probably isn’t reading this letter – but if the Government can have a rethink on parent governors, then I’m sure it can on grammar schools and school funding too.
