WELL, the proposed Clifford’s Tower visitor centre (The Press, October 20) does look like a block of toilets. It is totally out of character with the surrounding area, and in particular, Clifford’s Tower.
As a visitor centre, it does seem to be a way off the beaten track of most York visitors, but for those who do get to that area, are the amenities actually going to include toilet facilities, as that is what is sadly lacking in York in general.
The ones that are available are quite shameful in their presentation, being rather grubby and aromatically challenged.
We have been in Queensland for five weeks and absolutely everywhere provides toilets in abundance, free of charge, spotlessly clean and fresh, even on cliff tops or in the bush and no-one has any qualms about using them.
We were in Changi airport for a few hours. Toilets?
Plenty and spotless, as were the ones we used in Singapore itself when we stayed there some years ago.
Other countries take pride in the presentation of their facilities and they don’t charge a fortune. Why doesn’t ours?
