I WISH to state how disappointed I am from reading the news (The Press, October 12) that Cllr Ian Gillies, the Tory member for transport, will probably agree to a proposal to move £418,000 to provide better access for cyclists and pedestrians at Scarborough Bridge from this financial year into next year’s budget.
Why should City of York Council be beholden to Network Rail, who only recently spent a fortune on remedial work at Scarborough Bridge?
Cllr Gillies should realise that if this move is approved it will condemn pedestrians and cyclists, who may have a disability and therefore cannot currently utilise Scarborough Bridge, to use some of the busiest and most air polluted roads in that part of York.
Surely Cllr Gillies must realise that not just vehicles are part of a transport system but also cyclists and pedestrians, and should do everything, quite urgently, to ameliorate this problem.
