I WOULD like to add my congratulations to Spen Allison and Stuart Evans as winner and finalist in the Sporting Hero category at The Press Community Pride Awards.
Well done, you richly deserve it.
When we both worked at the carriageworks, Stu and I regularly had friendly banter over rugby union and rugby league, and Wales against England.
Even in our New Lane clubhouse when he was with York Locos, this mutual respect continued.
As for Spen, it was well over 50 years ago that he invited me to play in several Interworks competitions and Sunday League games he organised (INL, I think) both at Clarence Street and the Mire.
He was a great motivator and, as a union lad, I enjoyed the confrontations with the opposition.
Wonderful and sometimes painful memories with this league stalwart.
