I WAS shocked to read the story about the axing of the York Minster bell ringers (The Press, October 13).
As a historian, it is my belief that this is only the third time in the last 100 years that the bells have been silenced by choice (the other times being First World War and Second World War).
I would very much like to know more about who, or what, was considered bad enough to stop the bells of this city?
James Etherington, York
