I WAS bemused to read that your correspondent combines children being sent home from school for infringing the uniform code, with upholding Christian standards.

I don’t remember reading anything about uniforms in the Bible. I believe Jesus is reported as saying “Suffer little children to come unto me”. I can’t think He sent them away for wearing the wrong shoes.

In my opinion it is seems likely that the teachers at the schools mentioned in various media reports wish to stamp their authority, and indicate to children and parents (who after all pay their salaries via their taxes) that they are the ones in charge.

Together with ordinary education I suggest that part of the duty of schools is to build self-esteem in their pupil; that is, to ensure that children understand they have the right to be treated with respect.

It is hardly respectful to send bemused and embarrassed children home, quite possibly to empty houses as many families need both parents to work.

When people rely on foodbanks to eat, the style of their children’s trousers will hardly be a top priority.
