PETER MOORE says electrifying railways does not in itself provide more capacity (Letters, September 10).

This isn’t entirely true. Electric trains have better acceleration, so the lines can carry more trains per hour, especially where there’s a mix of different train types and speeds.

As an example, taking the Transpennine electrification as far as Selby makes sense. Without that, electric York to Leeds trains would have to share the tracks between Micklefield and Leeds with diesel stopping trains from Selby, slowing things down and providing less capacity.
