ANOTHER planning proposal, another queue of naysayers rushing to denounce whatever has been proposed (The Press, August 23).

As ever, in York we are at our happiest when telling others what we don’t like.

When I was executive member for leisure and culture back in 2008 a woman rang the department to complain about the caravan festival on the Knavesmire.

She couldn’t open her windows for the noise, there was litter all down the street.

Drunk festivalgoers were intimidating local residents. On and on she went.

A patient council officer listened to this long rant and, when it was done, politely pointed out that the festival hadn’t happened yet.

It was taking place the following weekend.

I know said the angry resident, but I am away on holiday next week so I wanted to get my complaint in before I go.

And that just about sums us up.

Instead of even daring to suggest constructing something beautiful and modern, timid architects offer up dull pastiches of period buildings and quickly don their hard hats, knowing that even this will leave temples throbbing and pacemakers straining.

Dreaming of an amazing glass pyramid like they have outside the Louvre in Paris? How dare you?
