SO the council have finally decided to act on the scourge of the A-boards obstructing the narrow paths and streets in York city centre and make it safer for disabled and partly sighted people to move around (The Press, August 18).

But no-one has pointed out to them that A-boards create mini chicanes, making the cyclists and motorists zigzag, slowing their progress through the pedestrian zone.

They also prevent cars and other vehicles from mounting the paths and endangering pedestrians on foot.

Now is the time for the council to implement a pedestrian zone that really works.

After all there is only vehicle entrance at Goodramgate once the bollards are in place on the other streets and that should be policed.

All mounted cyclists should be asked to dismount and made to stay (for say ten minutes) - after all the reason for cycling is to speed their journey.

By delaying them it will make riding in town non time effective.
