I OFTEN get approached by people wanting me to give them details of England’s oldest horse race, the Kiplingcotes Derby.

It is always run on the third Thursday in March. It was first run in 1519. There has never been a break in the race since.

For those interested enough, here is my record, of which I am mighty proud.

I first rode in the race when I was aged 50. I only missed taking part once in the next 25 years.

I rode the winner ten times, was second five times and third twice.

Greedy sportsmen please take notice, first prize money is £50 and proud holder for 12 months of a silver trophy.

I enjoyed every minute of it all and would willingly do it all again.

I have learned in a long life that brass isn’t the be-all and end-all.

If I can rise in a morning, tie my boot laces and be able to walk from A to Z, I’m a millionaire.
