THE answer to the question “What is the advantage of the EU?” is that it provides the opportunity for the leaders and the people of all 28 nations to show that it is possible for them to forget old quarrels and harmful competition and come to a formal binding agreement to work together for their common good.
It is the embodiment of the fact that all humans, whatever their nationality, are alike in wanting to provide a safe, comfortable life for their families, and the strongest have to help the weakest.
The EU is the definitive humanitarian advance in social organisation at a regional level, as the United Nations is on a global scale.
If it is destroyed, it will be rebuilt on the same lines, with the UK as a member. The old models are history.
