RECENTLY a letter was published in this paper which espoused views which I personally find offensive. This letter has since been removed and an apology proffered.

I am not so wet as to think that it is reasonable to expect to go through life without being offended. I reserve the right to offend others and to be offended by others.

The best way to fight intolerance and prejudice is out in the open, by engaging in debate and testing the arguments on both sides. Offensive views should be published, and challenged. Hiding them away does not help anyone.

It is hushing people up that often reinforces the belief held by many who hold unpopular opinions that it is they who are being oppressed. If their views were aired and given the ridicule they deserve then the arguments about too much political correctness would soon be settled.

The insistence of many that no offence should ever be caused stifles the debate and the social progress that debate could bring about.
