I DO hope readers don’t take too much notice of Paul Hepworth’s opinions on traffic in York (Letters, May 17).
He is so biased against car users and we know he would love to see the whole planet riding push-bikes.
This isn’t going to happen Paul. People who wish to cycle already do so and no amount of encouragement will persuade those that don’t wish to otherwise.
Paul praises the council for their handling of the traffic situation. Does he not think that this policy of giving traffic a hard time to “encourage” motorists to use alternative forms of transport has had a long enough trial period, at least 30 years to my knowledge, and has been a total failure.
York citizens will never use buses en masse until they run on time, which is impossible as they are held up in the same way as other motorists by this draconian attitude.
As for the old story about “better traffic conditions encourage more car journeys”, what a load of rubbish, just a typical attitude from someone who doesn’t understand the mind-set of the average car driver.
Unfortunately, the powers that be seem to listen to extremists and ignore the silent (massive) majority.
