THE sad news regarding the demise of British Home Stores (BHS) with the potential loss of around 11,000 UK jobs is the biggest calamity in the retail business since the fall of Woolworth.

My main concern is that Sports Direct have put their head above the parapet to show an interest in taking on parts or all of BHS. If this was allowed to go through it would send a shiver through everyone in the retail business that many York residents are employed in.

I really hope that BHS can survive or alternatively that some other company, apart from Sports Direct, can move in and assist to protect around 11,000 workers from possibly an unpredictable future.
