I WAS very disappointed to see my local councillors (Peter Dew, Sam Lisle and Stuart Rawlings) voting against local democracy at the council meeting.

There was a motion before council concerning the government’s proposal to remove the right of local councils to determine how to spend their money, for instance preventing councils boycotting companies involved in fracking, or only working with companies that pay the living wage.

These councillors clearly do not believe that local councils make good decisions and believe that ministers in London must know best.

I hope that they will reflect on what their votes say about local democracy and support greater local power and accountability in future.

I also wonder if they would have voted the same way if it were a Labour government taking these powers.
