TWO correspondents have recently questioned the wisdom of painting advisory cycle lanes along part of Stockton Lane. The rationale behind this is not to directly benefit cyclists, but to address local residents’ concerns about excess speeding by motor vehicle drivers.

The concept is that the cycle lanes will narrow a motorists perception of the carriageway width, and so encourage slower vehicle speeds.

As these cycle lanes will be advisory, ie with dotted lines, it is not an offence to park in them.

Slower vehicle speeds will also make overtaking of parked vehicles by cyclists, a safer manoeuvre.
