WITH reference to the ongoing saga about York’s broken fountain in Parliament Street, considering we have just witnessed severe flooding, I suggest a replacement water fountain is not the best choice.

Would it be more feasible to construct a centrepiece bandstand on a raised platform? It could be hired out to street entertainers, which in financial terms could recoup initial expenditure plus any maintenance costs.

We already have several coffee and light refreshment businesses in the area with outside seating to provide a ready-made audience.

I retain memories of Parliament Street and the cattle market being a centre of attraction for tourists and locals alike.
