MONICA NELSON (Letters, February 1) joins others in calling for a bus station as a response to increased travel needs created by York Central.

However, we need to avoid mistakes of other cities, eg Sheffield, who created a bus interchange then a decade later scrapped half of it because bus operators regarded it as too remote from High Street.

To achieve connectivity with other routes and parts of the city centre a free shuttle bus as operated in Wakefield, Huddersfield and Bradford would be more valuable.

York’s Tory-led administration scrapped plans to trial such a service here this year, yet recently agreed to hand over £100,000 to bus operators for the two month long free weekend travel deal for young people.

Nice for those making use of it, but this money could have been used to trial a serious innovation for York.

York Central also needs more visionary solutions, eg tram-train links perhaps from Poppleton Park&Ride via York Central and York station to the hospital, Haxby and Strensall. To be a world class city in future, fast, efficient low-emission public transport will be vital.
