ALAN ROBINSON (Letters, July 11) is spot on about HS2 and its shortcomings.

It is a complete turkey of a design.

Worse than that, a far superior design called High Speed UK (HSUK), which follows the M1 motorway, has been submitted to the Government, who have taken absolutely no notice of it despite HSUK being £20 billion cheaper than HS2+HS3.

£20 billion cheaper? Yes, £20,000,000,000 cheaper. Just think what that could be spent on.

As well as being cheaper, HSUK is far kinder to the environment, does not go through the Chilterns Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, saves 600 million tonnes of CO2 (while HS2 will save zero tonnes) and has seven times better connectivity than HS2+HS3.

HSUK has been developed in Harrogate and York by professional railway engineers and is a fully worked-up design, not just an idea.

High speed rail? Yes, please. HSUK? Yes, please.
