I READ Julian Cole’s column of May 14 and note he considered the electorate had got it wrong, saying “the Labour leader was good at pointing out the problems… but his solutions weren’t delivered in human-speak”.

I disagree – Labour did not identify the problems and they failed to come up with sensible solutions. With low inflation, historically low levels of unemployment and record levels of employment, all Ed Miliband could do was to advertise his dislike of the people who had created all these jobs.

The British electorate understood far better than Mr Miliband or Mr Balls what was needed to complete the recovery of the economy after the disastrous mismanagement by them in the latter part of the last Labour administration.

We have seen similar symptoms during the recent Labour administration in York – they increased taxes when they could have frozen them and enjoyed a grant from central Government; they squandered funds on vanity projects which could have been postponed until there were funds available; and they took no notice of the public responses to their local plan.

The sensible voters of York did not get it wrong – more people voted for Conservative councillors than Labour ones and they signalled that it was time for a change. I hope the remaining Labour councillors appreciate this with due humility.

I hope, unlike Mr Cole, that five more years of Cameron and Osborne will result in even more records being broken for the number of people in York who are in employment.
