WELL it did not last long. The two main parties’ promises to work “in the interests of the people” was ditched once the results were known.

First-past-the-post is only in the interests of the Conservatives and Labour. With multiple party elections, this way of voting represents the greatest threat to our democracy.

A prime example of our unhealthy electoral system is Scotland.

It is now effectively a one-party state with a left-wing agenda. The turnout was an impressive 71 per cent compared to 61 per cent for the rest of the UK.

The Scottish Nationalists got 56 MP’s with 1,455,000 votes (50 per cent ) cast as opposed to Labour’s one MP with 707,000 (24 per cent) votes cast.

Disturbing evidence to Government demonstrating how inequity the whole system is.

It beggars belief why the media bang on about citizens feeling so disenfranchised not bothering to vote. The reasons are obvious.

A serious threat to Mr Cameron’s premiership is the 2016 Scottish Parliament election.

In the meantime, I would like to thank the 3.9 million people who voted for UKIP. It was not a wasted vote. Encouraging support throughout has spurred us on. UKIP took control of Thanet District Council and Ramsgate Town Council.

We continue to fight for you locally and nationally.

Paul Abbott, UKIP York Branch Secretary.
