I WAS greatly saddened to read of the final closing down after 120 years of York furniture and removal firm Whitby Oliver, formerly known as Whitby C Oliver.
It takes me back some 69 years when founder member of Whitby Oliver, Mr Whitby Charles Oliver, a former Lord Mayor of York, owned horses in training with my boss, William John Bellerby, with whom I was employed as stable lad and apprentice jockey.
I rode for Mr Whitby Charles Oliver and found him to be a man out of the top drawer and one of life’s gentlemen.
It was a privilege to have known him.
Incidentally my boss, Mr William John Bellerby, was a director of Bellerby’s sawmills, Hungate, York. Does anyone remember them?
