I WAS very saddened to hear that Richie Benaud had died of skin cancer aged 84.
I always admired and respected this Australian as a gentleman, excellent cricketer, good sportsman and the best cricket commentator ever.
He, along with the late Jim Laker, was superb commentating on any game of cricket.
They both knew exactly when to speak, when not to talk, and always said such good common sense things.
I enjoyed watching him as a player, a brilliant slow bowler who took over 200 Test wickets, canny tail end batsman and wonderful captain of Australia.
Australia never lost a Test match when Richie Benaud was their skipper.
The world is all the poorer without Richie Benaud.
