AS WELL as the Easter customs mentioned by Sue Nelson (April 6), Pepys celebrated those of St Valentine’s Day, which I think were more to his taste and pocket.
He also recorded that at the close of Lent, 1662 “…the poor men most of them have been forced to borrow all the money due for their wages before they receive it, and that at a dear rate, God knows”.
Strange how today we still adhere to these old traditions.
